Beyond gaining hands-on experience on group gear and learning how to use it, Pali Outback students will learn the steps of outdoor trip planning, which includes selection of a route, monitoring weather forecasts, packing necessary equipment for location and climate, and meal planning and packing. All of this is integrated with LNT principles as the core foundation.
What’s Covered
This class covers how to properly prepare for a trip including gear use, proper packing a backpack, trail etiquette and LNT principles. Students will get an introduction to our group gear and get taught how to use it. They will learn the steps of planning a trip (figuring out a route, forecast and equipment, food planning and prep basics, etc) as they learn LNT principles (the first is plan ahead and prepare). Each group will also begin some foundational team building activities to start forming a close knit group. This is also a great time for students to receive a trip overview as they learn to plan and for them to ask questions to our staff. (Basic wilderness first aid training can be added in here, if desired by the school – no certification will be gained.)
