Nature & Our Mood: Why Spending Time Outdoors Makes Us Happier

Have you ever wondered why there is a natural attraction between people and nature? In a study by Happify, they determined that nature leads to happiness. It's human nature for people to be substantially happier outdoors when we are in green or natural environments, compared to urban environments. When you feel a connection to nature, you are generally happier than those who do not.

In our constantly busy lives, it can feel like a "rat race" to get anything done. The good news is that it doesn't take long to make that connection. Being outside for as little as 20 minutes a day makes people feel more alive. With spring upon us and the summer months quickly approaching, it is the perfect time to join the other 57% of Americans that prefer to spend summer evenings outdoors. It's time to move, and #Optoutside.

Getting into nature improves your mental and physical health. "While being in nature our bodies produce lower levels of proinflammatory cytokines, meaning we are in a healthier state." according to Happify. There are many ways to get outside in nature other than physical activities. 69% of people who took part in "green" activities such as gardening or environmental conservation felt an increased sense of well-being. It's as simple as taking a short hike or walk outside to help reduce stress and depression.

Live in the city and can't make it to nature? Keep it simple when you reconnect with nature with these easy tips.
  1. Take a walk in a park and experience flowers, animals and water.
  2. Lie on some grass and watch the clouds fly by.
  3. Smell the flowers.
  4. Walk barefoot outside.
There are so many options when it comes to connecting with nature. Ditch the gym and treadmill for a walk outside.  Join an outdoor group.  Or simply do your work or studies outside!
